Can the food you eat really help or harm your chances of getting pregnant?  You bet they can!  But before you go on a guilt trip about what you're eating, read this article - you may be surprised by what you learn.

Fat is not bad.

I know.  It's earth-shattering, isn't it?  You've been taught since grade school that fat is bad for you.  Fat makes you fat, right?

Wrong.

In fact, that's not just wrong.

It's dead wrong.

Fat does not make you fat.  In fact, you need fat to stay healthy.  A lot of vitamins are fat-soluble, meaning your body needs fat to break them down.  Plus your brain is made of fats.  It needs fats!  And your baby's brain will be made of fats when you get pregnant.  Even if you're OK with starving yourself (hey, you shouldn't be!) - you're not going to starve your baby.

Research is proving that old theories on fat were wrong.  And it's proving that fat is vital to your fertility.  Sure it's not good to be overweight, but did you know that being underweight, or even not getting enough fat, could be enough to stop you from getting pregnant?

So you need fats (even if you're already overweight).  You just need to make sure it's the right kind of fat.  Those studies showing fat helps women get pregnant are done with (can you guess?)... saturated fat.

That's right.  You need saturated fats.  Butter and coconut oil are two really good ones.  You need to be picky about fat, but I'll give you a huge hint - eat fats that people have been eating for ages.  That means eat butter, milk fat, coconut oil, olive oil (even though it's not saturated), etc.

If it's something come up with in the last hundred years... don't touch it!  Trans-fats, corn oil, soybean oil, margarine... steer clear of those fats!!

OK, other foods that will help you get pregnant:

Eat plenty of veggies and enjoy fruits in moderation.  These foods are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.  They give your body a big boost.  You can digest them more easily if you eat them with (surprise, surprise) good fats.  So butter your veggies, and enjoy cream with your berries!

Fruits and veggies are also high in folate, which where your body gets folic acid from.  That helps prevent birth defects in your baby.

Eggs and Fish Eggs - eggs are great super foods.  They're loaded with nutrients (eat the entire egg, yolk too!!)  Think of each egg like a big prenatal vitamin, they are that packed with nutrition.

Fish - fish are a good source of fat, and they supply the vital fats you've no doubt heard about: Omega-3's.  Enjoy fish as often as you like while you're trying to conceive.  They'll boost your health and your fertility.

Sea vegetables - Sea veggies like kelp and kombu pack a lot of nutrition in their packages.  You can easily cook the veggies in a broth base for a big then strain the veggie out - much of the nutrition will remain in your stock.  Sea veggies are very high in natural iodine, which is being found to be vital to fertility.

Shellfish and organ meats - Shellfish (and pumpkin seeds) are high in zinc.  This nutrient really boosts your fertility, and it's vital for male fertility.  Organ meats (from fish or land animals) are also really good for you, providing tons of iron, co-enzyme Q, and other vital nutrients.

These foods are really just the start of a list of foods that are very good for you as you try to conceive.  Enjoy your meals, and cook at home as much as possible.  Include fertility foods in your diet and you'll be on the way to holding your baby in no time.
